Pupils from our different Pupil Leader groups participated in a special Food Taster Session, to help inform the new school menu.
The pupils learnt about the ingredients used, promoting healthy lifestyles and choices, the importance of sustainability and locally grown produce.
The pupils were ask to score the food that they tasted and leave a comment.
The options for food tasting were:
- Chicken, rice, nan bread with a yogurt sauce
- Spaghetti with jackfruit – Seasonal
- Chocolate cake with custard – Vegan
- Orange drizzle cake – Vegan
The pupils from the workshop enjoyed all four choices and learnt that they should not just say no to a product without trying it first. They were very pleased to be able to be able to have an option in choosing what they would like on the school menu.
The first dish informed them of the items that complemented the dish. E.g addition of the yogurt sauce bringing the dish together.
The second dish was a blind tasting dish and children had to guess the ingredients. Some of the children thought it was meat, some said tomatoes. They were quite surprised when they were informed that is was jackfruit as the main ingredient, which is a seasonal produce mainly available from March to June.
The children were given a healthy lifestyle choice of the vegan chocolate and orange drizzle cake. The children could not tell the difference and would love to have both cakes on the school menu.
